All Children Should Be In School
The ultimate goal of Every Child a Scholar is to build our own orphanages that support children from birth to age 18. Due to limited resources, nearly all of the orphanages that currently exist in the tribal area only house, feed, and clothe children through their primary schooling — that is, until age 12. Once they graduate primary school, most orphans in the tribal area are forced to find jobs (often traveling outside of Pakistan for work), to petition distant relatives to allow them to live with them, to or live on the streets. The lack of options these orphans face opens them up to abuse, child marriage, poverty, and exploitation. Many of them resort to drug use to cope, and suffer trauma. In Pakistan’s tribal areas, high school graduation rates are very low-there are 60 to 300 students on average per teacher, depending on the location–but they are exceptionally low for orphans. Female orphans in particular are highly unlikely to graduate high school. Soon, we hope to also provide orphans in the Pakistani Tribal Areas with a place to live until they are 18, a high school education and support through college, and access to trauma-informed and culturally competent counselors.
How We’re Helping Now
Our current mission, however, is to provide existing Pakistani tribal area orphanages and schools with the resources they need to support the children already in their care. The orphanages in this area are critically undersupplied, and many of the children they support do not own shoes or sufficient clothing. These orphanages often struggle to feed the children they already support. Once the area’s existing orphanages are fully supplied, we will expand our operations and build orphanages to help children of all ages.
By 2025 we aim to ensure that every orphan in the Pakistani Tribal Area is living at the standard outlined by the UN Sustainable Development 2030 goals, including:
- Access to a quality education
- Clothing and shoes appropriate for all weather
- A weatherproof, warm building in which to live
